If your customers talk to each other, then yes, you want a different
design. Most ISP's don't have a lot of this type of traffic and the extra
hop isn't a big problem.

OSPF allows you to weight routes so that you can have a backup route to the
supernet if one of the ABR's goes down. That is perfectly natural.
