Config lost durring a upgrade has been a MAJOR issue here at Erols for sometime now, I've had some conferences with Ascends Engineering department, and they have taken many steps to correct this, Apparently it use to write too far into the flash on a upgrade, I use to loose many configs on a upgrades, I haven't upgraded many times within the 5.0 Tree, But apparently things should be a lot more stable when going from 5.0ap20 to a higher release. I upgraded from 5.0ap20---5.0ap24 on about 60 boxes and did not loose any configs.
