(ASCEND) max 4004 and cisco 160x

I'm trying to do a dialout-callback between a max 4004 (5.0ap4) and
cisco 160x (11.2(4)).  I can get the max to call out to the cisco and
the authentication and connection is performed fine.  When I set the max
to expect a callback and the cisco to accept a callback request, the
dialout is sent from the max, the cisco answers and drops the call as
expected.  But, the cisco never calls the max back.  It appears the max
does not send a callback request to the cisco.  I believe the cisco is
expecting the callback request from the client side before initiating
the return call.  Has anyone ever tried this?
