Interesting stuff. The mindboggling thing about it is that the K56 hosts
actually do not inject any power in the PSTN at all. They inject digital
values into a B channel, and AFAIK nobody limits these values. So if the
power level into the PSTN is "too high", the only place where this happens
is at the telcos D/A that drives the 2wire to the customer. One could argue
that "if any possible signal pattern on a B leads to an exceeded voltage
or power or whatever on the analog output, the telco should fix this D/A,
because _it_ exceeds the FCC rules".
Interestingly enough, the officials for such rules here in Germany (the BZT),
formerly known as one of the most rigid shouters of VERBOTEN who made
high speed modems be illegal for years didn't raise its ugly head against
56k-Modems so far. World is changing...
