- Main Exchange to Local via Fiber using either RSU or RIM technology
- Then an open wire line re-generator somewhere on the telephone poles
before being delivered straight to the user's premises.
.... digital all the way
P.S. RIMs and line re-generators are normally buried in the cable ducts.

Was that 76 kilometers back to the C.O. I would guess that the customers
modem is lying to him. If he's getting a true 50K connection at this
distance you should figure out how and quick. Finding out he is overcoming
the laws of physics could prove quite profitable. Maybe even a Nobel prize
for Science.
