(ASCEND) CLID and 5.0Ap36 (fwd)

I'm not quite sure if this answers the question you're asking, but from
diagnostic mode, you can use the command 
> mdbstr [0] [1] [2] [AT command string]

0 sets both init strings to factory defaults
1 displays/sets init string #1
2 displays/sets init string #2  (in case you have too much to fit in #1)
