That was a rush/hack job to get it out.  Since the new RADIUS daemon is
all new and is completely database driven (auth AND accounting) we didn't
see much point it devoting a lot of time and effort to the old codebase.

Nope.  We're doing it now, and it returns well within the 3 second interval
nearly all of the time.  It may get longer in some cases, but right now
we don't have plans to make the timeout variable.
