        A modem is a modem, and a serial port is a serial port.  
        FreePPP and MacTCP are fairly robust, and can be set up 
        (by the patient user) to handle nearly anything you can 
        plug in.

        FACT 1) Macs are set to use CTS only flow control.  

        FACT 2) Since the 56K modems most likely come from the 
                factory set to RTS/CTS, you will need to change 
                your initialization string to:

                        AT&C1&D0&R1 

        GUESS)  You may also try replacing the "&D0" with "&D2".  
                Different Macs like to see different things sometimes.  

        OBSERVATION) Less complex than working out a chat script for
                     a Unix system in the "good old days", when modems
                     ran at speeds like 300bps!
