Presumably he is trying to cross the router. If the X11 client and server
are both on the same side of the NAT (inside or outside) there cannot be
a problem.
So he is trying to open an application on one computer and display it on
another. It depends whether he is trying to:
- Open an application on a machine behind the NAT P75 and display it on a
screen elsewhere on the 'net. I cannot see a problem with this.
- Open an application on a machine somewhere on the net and display it on
a screen behind the NAT P75. This will *NOT* work with NAT, and there's
not much you can do about it except to configure static port mappings.
I would suggest that the guy use ssh to log in from machine to machine
instead of telnet or rlogin. In addition to solving the NAT problem by
tunnelling X11 connections in the ssh channel, it also provides:
- Encrypted tunnel, so noone will sniff your X11 application.
and
- Automatic setting of the $DISPLAY environment variable and xauth (MIT
cookie) information so you don't have to do it manually.
