I believe the Ubuntu menu in the upper right is called the system menu. It lets us lock or shutdown, etc. See the attached screenshot of that menu from my laptop. My question is about the button at the bottom, second from the left, between the settings button and the lock button. It has a curved arrow and a padlock on it. If I click on it, the menu vanishes, but when I return to the menu that button now looks different -- it has the curved arrow but no padlock. If I click again, it goes back to the way it was. So it's a toggle switch, probably related to locking somehow, but I haven't been able to figure out what it is changing. It seems that the update-manager is supposed to tell me about the availability of an upgrade, but it didn't do that. I tried this command but got only errors: sudo update-manager -d To fix that, I logged out, but when I logged back in, I clicked the wheel icon and chose Ubuntu Xorg. Then I ran the update-manager command again and it worked, asking me if I wanted to upgrade. I wonder how many people will get stuck forever with 17.10 because it will never tell them about the upgrade. It is using DHCP. For some reason the name server stopped working for it, probably in March. I tried to ping the name server and it didn't respond. Another box in the same room, which is static and not DHCP, continued to work as before. It made me wonder if they made some kind of security change. Because of the work I'm doing with that machine (only connecting from the other one), I haven't bothered to find out yet what the deal is. A few years ago a C and C++ meeting started. Now it seems they have turned into a C, C++, assembly, embedded, and OS development group: https://www.meetup.com/TwinCities-C-Meetup/ While that could be an interesting group, their last meeting was on Go (golang). :( I think the future of C++ (increasingly I'm referring to it as ++C.) is bright. Find out what "window manager" you are using, and look at its documentation. Another box in the > same room, which is static and not DHCP, continued to work as before. > Mike, sounds like you do not have a veyr good handle on how the NICs are handled in Linux, and I am sure using Ubuntu does not help you learn much on that front... Type '/sbin/ifconfig' and see if the NIC has a live ethernet on it, with an IP configured for it, a gateway, etc. That will tell you if the DHCP is working or not. If not, try firing up the dhcp-client-daemon (dhcpcd) over that NIC, typically "eht0" like this: 'dhcpcd eth0' and see if you get it working. Chances are the dhcpcd is running, but you are not getting a leased IP for some strange reason -- which may have to do with some admin having blocked your machine, as you eluded. You can always force the use of a particular nameserver by editing the /etc/resolv.conf and adding something like: nameserver 128.101.101.101 In the above example, I am pointing to a notorious UofM nameserver, which may actually work pretty liberally for machines outside of the UofM.
