Target is ext4

I get the following error:

cat: NLS-Storage-flat.vmdk: Input/output error

cat works for other files from the same location though.

cat the file; cat file.vmdk > /destination/file.vmdk (or use dd or gnu ddrescue)

if it still does not work, the problem is likely with the destination,
does the destination filesystem support large files?
