It looked like a borked upgrade. The screen was there but looked like the
resolution was out of whack. Alt+f2 didn't bring up dash but it could have
been off screen (maybe another screen). I did attempt to work from the
command line to fix but wasn't getting to far with that (Ctrl+Alt+FN, N
being a number...). As I was able to access the system from command line
and access his data to get a backup, I decided to do a fresh clean install
and fix some other options (another linux install) etc. Since it all
started from a failed upgrade, this was the best option for Wendell, a
clean slate from which to work from.

I give Wendell all the credit in the world for sticking with and trying
Linux. Linux when it is working, is awesome, but when it borks, it can bork
hard and if you don't deal with it on a daily basis or have buckets of
patience, it can get really frustrating quickly. As he has been attempting
to fight through it since before Christmas, he is a trooper.

I am glad that I was able to help but more importantly that Wendell was
happy when we left and excited to get home and get back to work on his
Ubuntu machine.
