You shouldn't need to. Fully-licensed ESXi is *exactly* the same
software-wise as the free version. What license key you apply to the
machine just unlocks certain features. You should be able to keep the
VMs running and just apply the key and be done with it. The "Eval
Mode" nag will disappear and you'll be set.

There is no ESX anymore - they've moved to ESXi only for their server
virtualization product.

Fail. Sorry, don't do that. I'd be suspect of your install. Who knows
what was added to or removed from the OS from a not-so-trustworthy
source. If I were you, I'd shut down the 6 VMs, copy them off of the
server, re-install with ESXi downloaded from VMware directly, then
copy the VMs back onto the server.
