As a former DoD family member one said: The only way to make sure there's nothing recoverable on the drive (meaning not making it financially worth it to recover) is to drill a few holes randomly spaced from the center of the drive with a 1/4" bit.

Apparently that's the "DoD-proof" level of data destruction.
