You gotta put the image somewhere if you're not blasting it straight to the
new drive.  You using a USB drive or something?

Clonezilla will easily handle that task - I use it for all of my imaging
needs.  You might want to use gpartd (sp?) to resize the partition on the
new disk afterwards.
