It seems like the conventional wisdom these days is that Perl is hard to 
manage for larger projects and Python is easier to read and share.  I 
really don't know, personally, but this is what I've heard several times 
from seemingly independent sources.

I use perl all the time for small things, mostly search/replace regex 
kinds of jobs which can be surprisingly powerful.  Perl is quite fast at 
that kind of thing.  I definitely would recommend learning Perl regexes. 
They are also nice in pcregrep, another useful program.
