I purchased something on eBay with PayPal just last month, using Firefox 3.0 on Ubuntu 9.04. Additionally, Firefox is a supported browser according to http://pages.ebay.com/help/account/browser.html , so the support rep you talked to must have been incorrectly informed. (However, Linux is not listed as a supported platform, not that it matters for this.)
