Having never used freenas I can't describe any failings in particlar with it but I have used samba on other systems including commercial nas boxes and have had significant windows users usage without samba crapping out. Maybe the default samba configuration is not universally optimal but then what is?

I guess I had not considered that, or heard that was a problem with
samba. What are the conditions or circumstances that could lead to samba
failing, if it is set up properly?
