Seconding this recommendation, but going a step further; if you only need to recover data i would use http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec. i recently had to use it to recover 70Gb of pictures from a failed laptop hard drive. a drive that had a headcrash and i could not even dd or dd_rescue. ( it recovers all files it is able to reconstruct, not just images anymore)
