Given that it's 2008 and that we no longer have significant RAM or storage issues to deal with AND given that this is a fairly low-traffic list, are you really impacted that severely by 13 messages? It's not that it's difficult to deal with the volume. It's the emotional pain of exciting highs and devastating lows. He just gets too excited when a new message hits his TCLUG mailbox and then let down again when he finds a message void of the typically interesting TCLUG dialog. I feel your pain. I've searched past stuff here as well as done Google searches and called 3-4 tech support lines to get answers. Discovered that Vonage is just expensive, and that others just don't or won't help much. I think a couple of the providers that offer 2 lines with a basic home plan may be my answer, but they won't or can't help and say I gotta use their hardware which makes me suspicious whether I can use their features as I could with Vonage (Vonage requires extra monthly payments and/ or 2nd subscription to do what I listed below: expensive and not "seamless".). I'll appreciate any and all comments. Here's what I think I want: VoIP home plan desired: Unlimited calling in US & Canada 1 home line, replacing POTS by Frontier, and keeping same number. Only need one number. use my Linksys RTP300 adapter for home line (Linksys info sez this will do my VoIP home connection). online access (from anywhere) to features, forwarding, and other standard VoIP personal preferences unlimited online changes to forwarding home number to cell phone, or unlimited forwarding to designated laptop, etc (eg, forward to personal laptop when going to 9-5 job, vacation, etc) unlimited changes to access/substitute home phone via my laptop at WiFi hotspots (ie, any broadband link) via a USB adapter such as Vonage claims for their V-Phone product (tiny adapter: www.Vonage.com/V-Phone), or via SW such as Vonage claims for their V-Pro product (SW only with headset, needs no adapter - but there's no online product info) Notes: 1) I want the ability to switch home to laptop so I don't always need to use cell "prime time" minutes, but have the choice. 2) do I need or want a hardware adapter like the Vonage USB V-Phone for my laptop to reduce CPU load? 3) is their an unlocked product like the V-Phone which is locked? 4) prefer the choice for laptop to access via Ubuntu or WinXP so phone can be ready in background, regardless of my main application. 5) Vonage tech support said that frequent switching from home to a V-Phone (eg, daily) isn't allowed, but sales said it is unlimited. 6) the services which said I must use their equipment did not or would not clarify how I could use my laptop as a phone at a hotspot. I could not locate a site or something and did MANY searches before asking this here.. Plus they are pretty crazy cheap for 199$ for two years which works out to around 8$ a month BUT BUT BUT they don't tell you they charge a monthly recovery fee of now around 3$ so its more like 11$ a month. Maybe that's included now, I got in for even cheaper early on and perhaps they figured out that it was too cheap just ask them about it if you order. In any case that's not too bad for an unlimited plan with dual phone lines, BUT that dual line means that you have two lines on the same number so you can carry on two conversations at the same time on two different lines but you can't (as far as I know or perhaps for more money) have two different numbers on those two lines. I honestly didn't check to see if they meet all your requirements as I'm actually fairly lazy. --j On Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 12:55 AM, Chuck Cole wrote: > I'm looking to replace my home phone service with a non-Vonage but Vonage-like VoIP service. Dan, I'm not familiar with the unit you've got, but in most cases, there is a web interface, which will have an option to create a 'wireless bridge,' or to simply turn of the DHCP server. In certain cases, you may need to disable the DHCP server, and connect your internet connection to one of the LAN ports on the unit, rather than the WAN port, leaving the WAN port empty. I can't provide step-by-step instructions, but in any case, this should be a very simple process. Basically all you need to do is just turn off the Netgear's DHCP server and then run a cable from your Smoothwall's private interface to one of the switch ports on the netgear router/ap. This is a test bed for web development software with an Oracle db in the background. The server is an HP Proliant DL380 G3 - Bios version P29 09/15/04, loaded with RHEL5.1, running 5 redundant fans, two processors, 4 70+ GB hard drives and six sticks of RAM. I mention this because some people think this generates more heat therefore the fans kick in harder, which is not necessarily true hence the speed is the same upon booting this system. Some of the information I've gathered is the fan speed can only be brought successfully with Windows Server or at least documented: http://forums12.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?admit=109447627+1219183779786+28353475&threadId=643218 If I plan on installing the latest HP Support Pack it appears it may only give me: ftp://ftp.hp.com//pub/softlib2/software1/doc/p603757071/v48462/psp-8.11.rhel5.linux.txt Added fan module number to message logged to syslog for MSA70. And I would have to upgrade to RHEL5.2: RH EL 5 = Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 HP management Agent support is now available with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 and the HP Linux ProLiant Support Pack version 8.10. The last and less probable option is to roll back to an older BIOS which allowed the user to manage the fan speeds? Rolling back the BIOS probably not! Having zero exposure I'd like to know if anyone with experiencecan tell me if installing the HP System Management and Support Pack will give me better system /fan control or will it be a waste of time? They have multiple redundant fans, that all turn on high speed (sound like a jet engine) during boot up but then slow down to a more tolerable speed/sound once the system boots up. If you work the sytems hard enough and the temp gets too hot, they will spin up to high speed for a while and then spin down again. I don't think I have seen anything in Windows or Linux that will allow for enterprise fan speed control. I've got one setup, but it's really slow. Slow here is how long it takes apache to allow me to edit files via webdav or when using subversion. In my previous job I had apache setup to use mod_auth_kerb to do authentication and talk to a windows AD server. This worked nicely and seemed to perform well. Now I'm using the same setup, however I'm using a Linux kerberos server instead and it's really slow. Around 6 seconds to just do an svn ls. When I'm using webdav I see a number of propfind and get log entries in the apache log and they're between 1 and 2 seconds apart. Looking at the kdc log I see lots of entries created like this: Aug 20 11:48:07 leech krb5kdc[25237](info): AS_REQ (7 etypes {18 17 16 23 1 3 2}) 128.33.251.52: ISSUE: authtime 1219250887, etypes {rep=16 tkt=16 ses=16}, jschewe at BUM for krbtgt/BUM at BUM Any ideas as to why this is so slow? I've found a patch for mod_auth_kerb that caches the authentication data and that takes care of SVN, however I need group information for webdav, so I'm using mod_authnz_external with pwauth and that's dog slow. So I figure there is a problem with my kerberos server setup. -- Jon Schewe | http://mtu.net/~jpschewe If you see an attachment named signature.asc, this is my digital signature. Zbikowski | http://andy.zibnet.us > > IT Outhouse Blog Thing | http://www.itouthouse.com Noise levels aren't a design consideration of modern rackmount gear. Be thankful it's 2u, it's not uncommon for a 1u server to have anywhere from 8 to 16 17,000RPM fans in it. At 1.6" they can make quite a racket. If you're not used to rackmounts you're probably never going to get it to a level of noise output that you consider acceptable. If you are saying that it's unacceptably loud compared to your dell 2950 or something that's one thing. If it's unacceptably loud compared to your desktop...well that's just how rackmount gear is these days. -- Thanks, Josh Paetzel PGP: 8A48 EF36 5E9F 4EDA 5A8C 11B4 26F9 01F1 27AF AECB -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Though I can't speak to the existance of a linux community in the area, I *can* say that broadband shouldn't be an issue. My parents got cable internet in their house in Willmar around '98 or so, and since moving out of town, have had a DSL line "out in the sticks" at their lake home. I'd be surprised if broadband wasn't available in Kandiohi, though a call to the local Chamber of Commerce or City Hall would probably be able to clear things up quickly. Good luck! -Erik On 8/24/08, Tom Poe wrote: > Planning on relocating from Iowa. Looking to make contact with members > west of Minneapolis. I'm building up a Linux box to be the console server which I'll allow access in through. So my first question is has anyone setup a public console server and have any recommendations on setting it up? This box would be only used for the lab and nothing else so I'm not too worried, plus the lab would be on a whole separate segment from my home network but I still would want to lock it down as much was reasonable. I was thinking of Chrooting all users and setting up conserver for the console application ( http://www.conserver.com/). I'm also working on some scripts to basically flash the lab back to a standard working config. Does anyone have any interest in playing around in a Cisco lab? Its starting out with 4 3640, 4 26XX, 1 1620, and a 2924 switch but I'm working on adding to it as I can afford to, I'm trying to get it close to this design: http://www.internetworkexpert.com/resources/ccierack.htm. Also if anyone wants to contribute equipment to it I was thinking of somehow creating a "super" class of users that could reserve lab time and take ownership of the lab during that time. Also anyone have a spare rack taking up space? I'm about to go buy a relay rack but I thought I'd throw that out first... --j -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I've accumulated equipment racks over the years and I'm ready to part with them. I won't charge anything for them, you'd just pick them up if you're interested. If they go unclaimed, I might target them for scrap metal recycling next. One of these racks held a repeater project of mine and the others were for future projects for myself and my friends that just never panned out. Email me in the next 4 days if you're interested. I have a handful of HP Proliants, and I must say they are not so load. I recently purchases a box from systamax, and threw it in the server room. It sounds like the space shuttle, and winds down to a nice 747 at take off. I am often in the server room, and sometimes hear people trying to talk to me. I simply look up at them, say "What?", stare for about 3 seconds, put my head down, and carry on with my work. I love it. This has no relevance to anything, but I just want people to know that the noise can be your friend :) Robert De Mars From tclug at b-o-b.homelinux.com Tue Aug 26 13:45:34 2008 From: tclug at b-o-b.homelinux.com (Robert De Mars) Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2008 13:45:34 -0500 Subject: [tclug-list] Dell Optiplex 745 - Will not reboot Message-ID: <48B44F4E.5050606@b-o-b.homelinux.com> Hello, and a good day to you all. I have a small problem that I can not seem to figure out. I have just installed Slack 12.1 on a Dell Optiplex 745 Desktop. The box is all stock, but with a 4Gig ram upgrade. I installed Slackware 12.1, and Slack is working properly. My problem is when I tell the machine to reboot ( shutdown -r now ) it goes through the process of shutting down, but gets stuck at "Restarting System." I then have to manually power down the box, and restart it via the power button. This machine will soon be headless, and is intended to run inter-company web applications & things of that nature. Any thoughts why it freezes at "Restarting System.", or what I might do to correct this would be greatly appreciated. Thank You Very Much! I would double check that your kernel has the necessary APM or ACPI support enabled depending on which the hardware supports. I have never used Slack so I don't know what the defaults are and I have never used an Optiplex 745 so I don't know what it supports. A quick search reveals that this is maybe a linux bug and that it's more apparent on your hardware especially. http://www.mail-archive.com/unattended-info at lists.sourceforge.net/msg08001.h tml From tsinks at isd.net Tue Aug 26 14:34:27 2008 From: tsinks at isd.net (Timothy Sinks) Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2008 14:34:27 -0500 Subject: [tclug-list] Dell Optiplex 745 - Will not reboot In-Reply-To: <48B44F4E.5050606@b-o-b.homelinux.com> Message-ID: <1219779272_3093@surgemail5> Check the /var/log/boot.log - turn it on if not - BOOTLOGD_ENABLED=Yes. Also at boot time try entering - dmesg > boot_msg There are other things you can do to get more messages. You can capture your screen also.
