It's not necessary that the kernel code be GPL compatible. For example,
you can run GNU on MS Windows.

Interesting, Nate, I hadn't heard of it.  Is the Solaris kernel now 
distributed under a GPL-compatible license?

What would be the advantage of using that OS instead of Ubuntu?
