Pick the distro/OS/kernel that you are best able to support. Others on the list can trumpet the merits of [Ubuntu/FreeBSD/OpenBSD/RedHat/Fedora/Windows/Whatever] but at the end of the day it will be you who is looking at the console when things need to be setup or fixed.
