I've used File System Visualizer(fsv) for this in the past. I had to 
compile it; I don't think it's packaged in any distros. It gives you a 
nice proportional graphic representation of disk use, and you can 
navigate into subdirectories and get the same data. You probably don't 
want to run it in / though, it'll take a while to scan your whole 
filesystem.
