We have a winner!  I must've skipped over that setting, as I now see
it sitting in the Ubuntu wiki I looked at yesterday (though not nearly
as plainly worded, and without the boot arg).

The NIC still doesn't work, but I can get my hands on a kernel that
should take care of that.
