Many distros can be as light as you want them to be.  I'll plug
(K)Ubuntu myself as it works fantastically on my laptop.  It is
.deb-based not .rpm though.

If lighweight is your aim, I would highly suggest XFCE4 over KDE.
Very quick window manager that is perfect for older systems.
