Here is how I was able to get wpa_supplicant to work on the Dapper live CD. http://jeffrasmussen.wordpress.com/2006/05/13/ubuntu-wpa-goodness/ I tried repeating the steps and it seems I left out the correct sequence for adding the wireless card through gnome.
