Yes, actually there is.  Just went paging through, and found a whole bunch 
of lines of the format:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using default mode "640x350" (hsync out of range)

except the resolutions keep changing.  These are followed by:
(**) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes for display device CRT-0:
(**) NVIDIA(0):      Default mode "640x480": 25.2 MHz, 31.5 kHz, 60.0 Hz
(**) NVIDIA(0):      Default mode "320x240": 12.6 MHz, 31.5 kHz, 60.1 Hz

(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 640 x 480

Which is my problem.  It *is* properly detecting the nvidia card, which is 
nice to know- it just looks like I have hsync configuration problems.

No.  The nvidia driver is what I want to be using, not the nv driver, tho-
