Strangest thing.  I can't run
$ gdesklets shell
through the terminal, I get "ORBit...missing" regardless of what I do.  But
$gdesklets
to bring up the gnome interface works fine.  Mysterious, but my desktop is
halfway back to functional again.  Thanks for all your help.
