I've had the most luck with mplayer. I've found that it has the most codecs
and does a good job of automatically determining the file type you are
playing.

For streaming audio, you might have to pass the audio URL directly to
mplayer: "mplayer http://some.website.com". mplayer doesn't have a built-in
browser, so you need to know the exact URL.
