I panicked and rebooted, and got back 7.5 gigs..
Really odd.. But pretty much what Mikke Miller mentioned..

Thanks for all the responses everyone.. Very reassuring to know there
are people out there willing to lend a hand in a pinch.

Even when logged in as root?  If you can't do ps as root, try to add
more swap, or are *all* partitions full?
