I was going to address this yesterday with the same suggestion, but
got sidetracked.  You could also modify the config files
(/etc/ssh/ssh_config &/or /etc/ssh/sshd_config ) to enable keep alive.

However, that may pose a security risk.  I prefer the keep alive options off.
