I have had problems with this chipset:

0000:00:0f.0 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc.
VT82C586A/B/VT82C686/A/B/VT823x/A/C PIPC Bus Master IDE (rev 06)

When I first bought my board (MSI KT7) I had problems when large amounts
of data went across the PCI bus. Check syslog for messages like
'spurious interrupt'. If that is the case see if there is a BIOS update.

Do you know if you have the 'B' rev of the VIA southbridge? If you have
the 'A' rev, there is a known bug.

One of the symptoms of an approaching nervous breakdown is the belief
that one's work is terribly important.
Don't be so confident - you are not that great.
