I use an external 2.5" hard drive enclosure to work on laptop hard
drives.  Recovered a lot of systems that way.  Picked one up for $25
at a trade show; now that I look at NewEgg you can get them even
cheaper than that $10-$20 w/ shipping:

At the very worst you can backup her data, wipe the whole thing and
start over... once you have a working optical drive.
