Regarding the installing - the Mepis distro is based on Knoppix and
designed to be either run live off the CD or easily installed to the
hard drive.

I can vouch for it being Debian-compatible - I've used apt-get several
times, and it installs from Debian package sites. (btw, apt-get is
seriously sweet - this is my first real exposure to it.)
