I thought about it some more and thought maybe I got the solution backwards.
I use my XP boxes to store/access files off the Linux server through Samba.
So, I tried accessing the XP SP2 box from a Linux command prompt. It worked
too (clipped for brevity and security):

smbclient //white/G$ -Uadministrator
Password:
Domain=[WHITE] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]
smb: \> dir
Program Files                      DA        0  Mon Sep  6 15:42:26 2004
RECYCLER                          DHS        0  Thu Jan  9 22:22:48 2003
WINDOWS                            DA        0  Mon Sep  6 15:28:22 2004

That bug report doesn't seem to fit. The reporter is able to connect,
just after a long time. I'm actually getting permission denied right
away.
