Tim,

I would use mutt: 'mutt -a file.tar.gz myemail at example.com'. Only potential 
drawback is that you probably need a .muttrc containing something like the 
following:
    set from=myemail at example.com
    set hostname=example.com
    set realname="Real Name"
    send-hook . my_hdr From: myemail at example.com
    send-hook . my_hdr Return-Path: <myemail at example.com>
    send-hook . "set realname='Real Name'"

You may not need all that, but its what I have.

I have used this technique before and it does work.
