I used to have it in a removable hard drive drawer, where it worked
fine.  I'm inclined to think it would be a good idea to just reformat
the dang thing and see if that helps (maybe just pulling it out of the
hard drive drawer and putting it into the usb enclosure wasn't a great
idea).

But I was wondering if there was something about the USB interface
that caused it to do this weird repeated incrementing of the mount
count.  Seemed like if it was repeatedly automounting the drive while
doing rsync, that could easily account for a lot of slowdown!

couldn't find anything about it on google (but then almost all i found
with that error message and USB was various and sundry dmesg-like
dumps).
