Yup.  Did that.  Seems a lot happier now!  In a way, my bad.  In
another, not so much.  Stuffing these messages for a critical failure
into an obscure place in /var/log doesn't seem like an obvious Good
Thing.

Yeah, yeah, I know.  We're supposed to check the logs everyday.
Right.  I'm supposed to check my oil, transmission fluid, and tire
pressure at the gas station, too....

A warning light would be nice...
