I have an Inspirion 5150 which uses this same ethernet controller. Broadcom has released their own driver but it's pretty lousy. Within the last few kernel releases a much better driver has been incorporated, the option in the kernel configurator is
Network device support --> Ethernet (10 or 100) --> Broadcom 4400 ethernet support
a while back i put together a simple kernel compiling article if you aren't familiar with the process http://tom.catocom.com/compiling102.html

another thing, if your 1100 is like my 5150, it doesn't have apm support, if i remember you have monkey around a bit to force acpi to work instead. there is some good info available for running linux on laptops, it can be a real headache depending on the machine. try googling "inspiron 1100 linux" and you should get some good info.
