Any decent registrar will send you reminder emails starting at 90 days from
the expiration date.  If you miss or ignore half a dozen emails reminding
you to renew your domain, then you can't blame the registrar.

Wrong.  Do a Google search for "domain redemption period".  The registry
(VeriSign) charges a high fee to restore domains that have been deleted by
the registrar.
