I've used the atheros-based cards with the madwifi driver, and found it to 
be rather unstable. YMMV, of course.

If you can, I'd highly recommend getting cables to each of your stationary
boxes, and using wifi only for portable machines, when they are not
sitting right by a cable drop. In many cases, wifi in a house can cause
more problems than it solves.
