Hey everyone,

Nothing seemed to be working so I took a brute force approach and did a
complete purge of mysql-common, mysql-client, and mysql-server packages on
this Debian system and re-installed them. Everything worked fine at that
point. I must have screwed something up initially and not realized it.
Redoing things was no big deal since I hadn't started using the database
anyway.

Thanks for the pointers, everyone.

-Tim
