Thanks for the suggestion. I got:

beethoven:/home/wilson# mysql -u root -h localhost -p
Enter password: 
ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'root at localhost' (Using password: YES)

So if I used unix domain sockets, can I turn of the networking in my.cnf?
