I had toruble with a Xircom card and gentoo also  then card would beep 
during boot and lights would flash when it came up, but nothing would 
work... It's at work now so I'll try to repspond tomorrow if I can.... 
but I think i got around it by booting up, opening a term, su - to root 
then issuing a :

ifconfig eth0 up
and a
dhcpcd eth0
