Don't discount the role of lawyers in this whole mess. If they don't deal with this guy they may disadvantage themselves in defending their trademark with the next guy. Bad lawyers tend to think only in terms of legal solutions. Obviously someone stepped in and suggested they give the kid a little cash and a conference pass - the problem went away. What you should worry about is when they become sufficiently smooth that this type of thing never hits the press.
