Most mobos I've worked with are pretty good quality and Linux should work on most of them as well. My favorite brands are Soyo and Abit. My only real valuable recommendation is to stay away from AOpen video cards. 2 out of 3 that I worked with had fans that went bad. Eventually video would randomly barf (Windows or Linux).
