Not sure how well ATI support is (haven't had a new box with *nix installed yet, beyond my Compaq laptop, with a 9000 which worked fine) but the Radeon 9600 series (XT in both desktops...mobile in laptop I type this on) are fairly cheap in regards to your $300 limit. I picked both of my XTs for $150 - one a year ago, with rebate and HL2, and the other one for that straight up. Works great for gaming, and is very powerful, but still great on a budget. Maybe I'll install Linux here shortly, if so, I'll let everyone know how it goes. If you're interested in benchmarks under XP or something, lemme know offlist...more than willing to help.
