I don't know the full details of what you've done so far to get your
prism54 card working, but the most common issue I've seen is people
forgetting to load the card's firmware. The Windows driver CD that
came with your card should have the firmware on it. Technically
prism54.org can't distribute the firmware, but someone has a link to
it anyway.

For my card (SMC2802W) all I had to do was:
cp /media/cdrom/Driver/smc2802w.arm /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware/isl3890 
isl3890 is the name of the file, not a directory. :) You may have to
create the firmware directory...
