 Personally, I just killed the window: ^aK (capital K, mind)
 And if you want window 9 to be connected to ttyS0 when you start screen, 
add the following to your .screenrc:

screen 9 /dev/ttyS0 38400
screen 0

 The "screen 0" starts a $SHELL session on 0, and leaves you there.
 Pretty nifty stuff.
