The computers won't be talking through the gateway, as they are on the same
subnet.

If the "router" is a typical home broadband router like you'd buy at
CompUSA, then check to see if it has some sort of firewall enabled.  If you
connect the two computers to a normal switch, they shouldn't have any
problems seeing each other.

Also, make sure neither of the computers have a firewall enabled.  It sounds
like "Comp 2" could have a firewall that blocks pings.
